HOW DOES A HOMELESS MAN SPEND $100 SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

I received this great video in my Facebook account. This video a great example of "DON"T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER".

A parnkster gave a homeless man $100 and follow him to see what the man will do with the money. As with most of us he expected the homeless man to buy alcohol. What he saw stunned and touched his heart. The Homeless man was buying food for other homeless people. The prankster was touched and gave the homeless man another $ 100. Of which the homeless man gave the prankster some words of advise.

Watch this video and you will see that the poor is much richer in kindness than all of us.

The Art of War - Importance of Time Off for your Employee

November and December is a very busy month for hotels in Malaysia. Its the last term school holidays leading to Christmas and New Year. Families will be traveling, some resorts will be full during the durations. Manpower will be stretch to limit as this is the last two months for the year to maximize revenue and profit. What most of these hotels fail to see is what Sun Tzu in Chapter 2- Waging War  about prolong war.

"There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare"  Verse 6, Chapter 2 Waging War.

What I see is the staff will get very exhausted as some companies even hold back leaves and offdays. When the staff energy level and morale is low, then service level will also decline. When service level declines, customers are not happy. When customers are not happy, what do they do nowadays. They not only don't come back, they let everyone know of their unhappiness. They write in reviews, blogs, social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and so on. Then the whole world will know your service sucks. Sun Tzu's have another quote for this situation.

"Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue"  Verse 4, Chapter 2-  Waging War.

So what I normally do when the busy season is about to come. I will source for partimers so as I can reduce the extra working hours of my permenant staff. So they will be well rested. And I also give them time off to go for holidays with their family, especially those with school going kids. These are the perks thats is better than money. They will really appreciate you and work hard for you. Always remember that your staffs are humans too, they have feelings.
As Sun Tzu said in Chapter 9.

"Therefore soldiers must be treated in the first instance with humanity, but kept under control by means of iron displine. This is a certain road to victory" Verse 43, Chapter 9'

Sun Tzu - The Use of The Office Gossip

Most people will say that its not honest to use spies in what we do. But I don't agree with this statement. Spies if used with integrity and honestly can be a great asset to an establishment. With spies you can know why the competitors is getting more business or what they are doing differently. Maybe their product or sales team is better, so then you can improve your product or team with this piece of info. That is why Sun Tzu has dedicated a chapter on the use of spies. Below is one of the verse "Knowledge of the enemy's dispositions can only be obtained from other men." Verse 6 Chapter 13. THE USE OF SPIES Even the office gossip is useful.

The 10 Commandments of Getting Debt-Free | Credit.com

Nobody wants to go into debt, and everyone in debt wants to get out of it. Avoiding or getting out of debt requires a lot of self control, patience and smart decision-making, but it doesn’t need to be complicated.

To help keep you on your path to being debt-free, we put together a set of simple rules you can use as your guide.

1. Thou shalt not buy things you cannot afford.

Overspending can quickly get out of control. It may start with carrying a small balance on your credit card, but when you can’t pay off that balance the next month and you add a little bit more to it, you’ll have more trouble catching up.

This is about more than a bad shopping habit or a tendency to eat out often. Taking out a loan to buy a car that’s beyond your budget or a home outside your price range is going to make it very difficult to manage your other expenses.

2. Thou shall pay yourself first.

Before figuring out how much money you have to spend, dedicate a portion of your earnings to savings. You may spend most of your life debt-free, but if you haven’t spent many years building a retirement fund, you may find it difficult to make ends meet or to be able to retire when you want to. Keeping a tighter budget now so you can save will be worth the financial and emotional security you’ll enjoy down the road.

3. Thou shall have an emergency fund.

Unexpected life events tend to be expensive. When the car breaks down, when you get sick, when you lose your job, you don’t want to resort to using credit cards to pay for everything you need. A good rule of thumb is to put away a little bit of money each month until you’ve saved enough to cover three to six months’ worth of your expenses, and only dip into the fund for a true emergency. As soon as you’ve used some of the money, make a plan to replace it so you’re prepared for the next unpleasant surprise.

4. Thou shall track your spending.

Know where your money goes, and you’ll be able to make smarter choices about where to spend it in the future. You may be surprised to learn how much of your paycheck goes toward food or entertainment, but once you’re aware of your spending habits, you can change them if need be.

The Art of War - Be Humble

The restaurant where I am currently attached to was expanding. The owners were opening more restaurants elsewhere. So they added some new position to help oversee different sections of the restaurants as a group. Hoping that this move will improve operations. These people were supposed to work closely with the individual restaurant's operation team. One such position was to oversee the entire Food and Beverage Operations of the restaurants. They got a guy with a number of years experience and have said that he have worked overseas. So the owners felt that with all this experience, he was a valuable asset. The F&B Operations Manager came on board and started throwing his weight around saying this and that was wrong. He went around acting that he knew everything and we were all useless. He was the big boss and everyone must respect and worship him. He constantly reminded us that he was going to improve our services as we were all not good. He should have read Sun Tzu's Art of War. Chapter 8 has a verse on the five dangerous faults that may affect a General that is
"There are five dangerous faults which may affect a general (4) a delicacy of honor which is sensitive to shame" Chapter 8 Verse 12.

As for me, I just kept quiet and relaxed. These types of people think they know everything; therefore they won't listen to other people's ideas. It’s like what Sun Tzu said about attacking walled city. I didn't say anything. I used Chapter 5 verse as a guide.
"Hiding order beneath the cloak of disorder is simply a question of subdivision, concealing courage under a show of timidity presupposes a fund of latent energy, masking strength with weakness is to be effected by tactical dispositions" Chapter 5 verse 18.

Being all high and mighty, he didn't want to listen to us. He was just giving out ideas to the owners without studying terrain. His ideas for promotions were geared to high income customers but the customers in our area were all middle income. When we told him that some of his ideas were too far fetched, he just brushed it aside by saying that we didn’t know much.

That was 4 months ago, nowadays he look lost. As the restaurants is ready but the food and beverage is not. Even the equipment and staff haven't arrived. He can't ask us for help as his loose face with the owners as he has belittled us to the owners. So what Sun Tzu meant is like all religions say “BE HUMBLE”

9 Ways Gratitude Can Make You Happier, Fitter and Richer

Your parents taught you to mind your manners. You write thank you notes and tip your barista. But there’s more to being grateful than going through the motions. According to numerous studies, true gratitude is a powerful force that can improve your relationships, increase happiness and even boost immunity. Deep down, most of us know this to be true. But we still have trouble taking time from our busy lives to actually stop, reflect and give thanks for what matters most. The good news: Making the effort to get grateful is easier than you’d expect, and it’s way more effective that you might imagine.

Why It Pays to Be Grateful

Spend just minutes each day reflecting on what you’re grateful for and we can pretty much guarantee you’ll see a snowball effect resulting in physical, psychological and social benefits. Here’s the catch: You need to get grateful throughout the year — not just on Thanksgiving.

One study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research confirmed that individuals who had a more grateful outlook got better quality shut eye, stayed asleep longer and required less time to fall asleep than their less grateful peers. Perhaps more impressive, people who spent times focusing on grateful thoughts exercised for 1.5 more hours each week, compared to people who spent time focusing on the hassles in their life, according to a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Plus, at least eight studies have shown that people who express gratitude tend to show fewer symptoms of depression.

A grateful state of mind can help you win big in business, too. Once study conducted atHarvard Business School, found that participants who were prompted to think of a time when they were grateful were less likely to act impulsively when it came to financial choices when compared with people who were prompted to think of something happy or neutral. Gratitude increases our level of patience, researchers suggested.

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it,” William Arthur Ward, an American writer, once said. In honor of Thanksgiving, here are nine simple ways to cultivate gratefulness every other day of the year.

10 Easy Ways to Start Being More Grateful

1. Bust out your old diary.Studies show that people who make weekly gratitude journal entries feel better about their lives and more optimistic about the future. Not into breaking out the pen and paper? Try using an app. We like Five Minute Journal, which prompts you to write down three things you’re grateful for, three things that would make the day awesome and three affirmations (e.g. “I am confident,” “I am kind”) each day.

7 Quotes From Abraham Lincoln That Will Inspire You To Work Your Ass Off

Self-educated lawyer, the 16th president of the United States led the federal republic through its Civil War, its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis. Meanwhile, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. While his bragging rights can go for days, we will focus on his knowledge.

He left vast topics of knowledge, endless quotes and gave us written fortune to inspire us to become the best version of ourselves. The next 7 quotes from Abraham Lincoln will inspire you to work your ass off (and you know which ass I’m talking about.)

1. “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
If you think on the perspective to live longer, and not on the point of view to make the years count, you are wasting your time. In fact, you are wasting your LIFE.

We do not consider the fact that one day we will all die, and believe me that’s not scary, but inspirational. It reveals the shocking truth about the fear of death.

If you see the perspective of all geniuses, poets, artists and successful businessman that left and still have recognition in this world, you will see that they all say the same thing.

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” – Mark Twain

“If you live each day as it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right” – Steve Jobs

“Live everyday as if it were your last because someday you’re going to be right.” – Muhammad Ali

They said these things to inspire the upcoming generations and people who need a mind push. Everything you do today that doesn’t matter is madness and a waste of life.

The best way to change that is to start doing your own thing, your own life and create your own reality. Make each day count!

2. “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”

Human survival instinct comes since the beginning of time. If we are tested with harsh times, we can all cope with that, one way or another. But if you want to see what the real “lab mice” is doing in a man’s brain, give him power.

And how is this knowledge inspirational? If you really want to be successful person (however you measure and understand success) you need to be prepared to behave like a real leader when you hold elevated power in your hands.

People don’t understand that winning the lottery can be the worst thing that has ever happened to them (don’t get me wrong on this one). It’s not that you need money. You need something to feel worthy of, which most people think is money.

Now, you need money. You definitely do. But most of all you need something that you will find joy and happiness on the way.

So be prepared to hold power, but don’t seek it immediate. One day at a time …

3. “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”

The first thing that a man of value should do is to finish everything scheduled for the day. No but, no later, no tomorrow. Now.

If you want to be a weakling, you will keep rescheduling your life for tomorrow and later. It’s always harder to keep your word. Not for people around you, but for you. You should feel uncomfortable to reschedule stuff for later. That’s when you have the habit of doing things now.

If you reschedule things now, you worsen yourself, your mindset, and your whole environment, since everything you do affects something in this world. Think of you as a connecting tissue to a whole organism. If you decide not to play your part, you will destroy whole body.

Do things now. Don’t wait for your ghost to do things for you.

4. “The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.”

As we mentioned in number two, the real test comes when we hold elevated power.

If you think in terms that the future comes one day at a time, you won’t have to worry about the future at all.

Every whole is consisted of small things. Let’s reveal the brains function to unravel the theory.

The brain is formulated from three main parts: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. The forebrain is the main control center for sensory and associative information processing, visceral functions, and voluntary motor functions also called – prosencephalon.

The midbrain acts as a relay information system for the auditory, visual, and motor systems of the body.

And the last part of the brain is the hindbrain which controls basic functions like breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.

Even though we took the most complex organ to prove simple theory, you get the point that a whole can’t become a whole unless you build it one day at a time (e.g. your brain and all functions builds up since you were infant.)

Everything will come sooner or later. Your job is to strive for better future and brighter tomorrow.

5. “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

The real wisdom lies in preparation. You can’t outrun a marathoner just by thinking that you will.

Every goal and achievement lies in training and preparation, meaning experience.

There are many quotes stating that everything you can imagine is real. Well, winning a marathon, being the best executive manager or CEO of an industrial company can’t be real if you don’t sharpen your knowledge to become one. When you see, experience lies in knowing how to solve a problem or tangled situation in a spontaneous period, or a period of time when you least expect it. If everyone knew that crises are coming, they are not called crisis, right?

Give yourself time to prepare to become what you want to become, and believe me you will. Surround yourself with being the best version in whatever you want to become. Obsess with the fact that you will become best at it. Your surrounding and your automatism will form the future for you. That’s how the law of attraction works.

Sharpen the axe next time you prepare for battle.

6. “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

The whole humanity is consisted of 7+ billion people, and if you ask me it’s not possible for all to be soccer players, CEO’s nor executive managers. Everyone plays different part.

So if you chose to be either of them, formulate a master plan to become the best in that area. If you strive to be many things, you will end up being none.

Even if Abraham stated this wisdom extensively, he meant to inspire people to become the best version in their sphere of knowledge or talent.

So next time you doubt why you loved playing ballet instead of going boxing, remember that people have different roles in this world. Do your own thing.

7. “Don’t worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition.”

Being recognized is not the best thing. You can be as famous as Adolf Hitler, but definitely not worthy of recognition.

It’s not about being famous. It’s about being recognized for valor and heroism, or something you have done best and different than others. Something that always gave you a choice of letting it go and return the previous habits, or throw all away and strive for greatness, while you always chose the former.

Believe me that being worthy of recognition always takes to be different and unique, while I believe everyone hold that uniqueness once they let it shine through their human body.

How to Have a Great Day: 5 Simple Steps for Daily Happiness!

So you came here looking for more information on how to have a great day? Good on you! Let’s face it – in our 24/7 non-stop world of deadlines, accountability and stress, great days can be hard to come by!  But what if you could change that?

I’ve written about the topic of choosing happiness in the past and the importance of embracing different parts of ourselves.  A major message of this blog on Reaching Life Goals is to help you live your life to the fullest, using mindfulness as a conduit for change.

To build upon this theme, I am going to share with you 5 simple steps you can do each day to help make it great with the dual goal of building happiness into the dynamic.

Are you ready? Let’s jump right in!

1. Focus on gratitude early

Before you getting out of your bed, clear your mind the non-stop “to-do” list and spend 60 seconds focusing on what you are grateful for. Example: You woke up this morning, didn’t you? Guess what, not everyone else made it through the night! By focusing on basic things to be grateful for, you instantly help put yourself in a happy mood and repel negativity.

2. Choose happy foods

Part of having a great day is making healthy nutritional choices. One powerful approach is to choose your meals wisely and eat things that increase happiness.  Did you know that foods like apples, berries and oranges have been found to have mood boosting powers that happen to jack up levels of happiness? It’s true. Why not reach for something healthy right now?

3. Do something physical

This may seem like a silly point but physical activity has been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on mood while also acting as a powerful tool to increase happiness. You don’t have to hit the gym either to make this part of your daily ritual. Basic physical activities like stretching, walking or going for a bike ride can help to release powerful brain chemicals that are known to power up your happiness chip.

4. Schedule happiness

Yes, you read this right – schedule happiness!  In my experience, too many of us are focused on the needs and happiness of others that we forget to attend to our own self-care. Scheduling happiness for yourself can be as simple as taking a quiet walk around the block and focusing on gratitude or spending some time with your pet and observing mindful behavior.

5. Choose happiness

This final point may sound simple but that doesn’t mean it is easy. Choosing happiness means reaching deep inside and believing you are worthy of happiness. It means having confidence in your abilities and skills while accepting your limitations. It means identifying your triggers for stress in advance and choosing how you will respond. Choosing happiness means loving yourself for the person you are and turning off negative self-talk.

Final Thoughts

Hell yes you can have a great day. And you know what – you can have another great day tomorrow! Sure, things are going to come up that will derail you from time to time. That’s life. But with the right mental and emotional attitude, coupled with some tweaking on your part, great days can become part of your reality. Before you know it, you will be well on your way to a great week!

Wouldn’t that be fantastic?

Have a GREAT day – really!

10 Leadership Lessons From the U.S. Navy Seal Who Led the bin Laden Mission | ChiefExecutive.net | Chief Executive magazine

Every CEO has a list of leaders and mentors he or she looks up to or has learned from. Here’s a new one for your list.

Admiral William H. McRaven is the former commander of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 3 and the current commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command. He led the mission which resulted in finding Osama bin Laden. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, he recently gave the commencement address at his alma mater, and offered the graduates 10 lessons from his SEAL training that every leader can benefit from. He said, if you want to change the world:

1. Start off by making your bed. The first thing a sailor does every morning is make his bed. This sets him or her off on the right footing and gives a sense of pride. Begin every day by accomplishing a small task. It will make you feel good and put you on the right footing.

2. Find someone to help you paddle. It takes a team of seven SEALs to get across the heavy San Diego surf in a raft. The task is impossible to do alone. You can’t change the world alone—accept that you will need some help.

3. Measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers. He tells a story of a SEAL team that was the ‘runt of the litter,’ but outswam, outpaddled and outran the big guys every time. Judge people by their character and nothing else.

4. Get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward. Recruits whose uniforms didn’t pass inspection were required to dive into the ocean in full uniform, then roll around in the sand, an exercise they nicknamed being a ‘sugar cookie’. They had to stay in those wet, sandy uniforms all day. The ones who got frustrated didn’t survive because they didn’t get the true message: Things are never going to be perfect all the time.

5. Don’t be afraid of the “circuses.” Recruits who didn’t meet daily standards or time tests ended up on a list and had to participate in a “circus.” “Circuses” were additional training exercises designed to wear already tired recruits down. Many didn’t make it, but those who did, ironically, ended up being stronger and harder than those who didn’t go through a lot of “circuses.”

6. Sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head-first. A candidate broke a hand-over-hand upside down crawling-across-a-rope record by instead sliding across the top of the bar head first. What he did was really risky and no one else had ever tried it. But he tried it and he succeeded. He not only broke the record, he reset the bar.

7. Don’t back down from the sharks. Recruits who encompass a shark on a swimming exercise are ordered not to back down from it, but rather to punch it in the nose. McRaven tells the graduates, there are a lot of sharks in the world. If you’re going to succeed in life, you’ve got to face your sharks.

8. Be your very best in the darkest moment. Part of SEAL training is to conduct attacks on enemy ships. This requires being deep under pitch black water while listening to loud, distracting noises from the ship’s engines and systems. It’s very easy to get disoriented and fail. Every SEAL, he said, knows that when it’s darkest is the time when you need to be the most calm, composed and focused.

9. Start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud. During hell week, McRaven’s team of trainees found themselves in freezing cold mud up to their necks and were required to remain there for eight hours, until dawn. Just when it seemed that several of them were about to give up, one started singing, then another and another. All of sudden, they had hope. “If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world,” he said, “it is the power of hope. The power of one person—Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela and even a young girl from Pakistan, Malala—one person can change the world by giving people hope.”

10. Don’t ever, ever ring the bell. In SEAL training, recruits who want to give up simply have to ring a bell that hangs in the center of the compound. His final message: If you want to change the world, don’t give up. Don’t ever, ever ring that bell.

7 Ways To Stop Feeling Like Shit - Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement

Sometimes the changing of seasons can weigh you down and knock you out, leaving you grumpy, tired and all-in-all: shitty. Lucky for us, there are steps we can take to help reverse these less-than-desirable feelings. Everything is attainable and at the end of the day, [at the risk of sounding cliché], the only thing stopping you from feeling your best is YOU. Here are 7 steps you can follow to stop feeling like shit:

1. Stop Hitting The Snooze Button

When we hit the snooze button it gives our brain the message that we don’t want the day to start. I’m well aware that the sound of that obnoxious alarm at 6:30 AM makes us want to curl in bed for another 2 hours at least, but it’s time to make the most of your mornings. These precious hours are the only time in the day that we don’t have to open our mouths and answer to anyone yet… what could be better?! And if that doesn’t convince you, here are 5 reasons you should wake up earlier.

2. Give Up Animal Products for 1 Week

Disclaimer: I’m not vegetarian, vegan, raw, paleo, gluten-free, or any restricted diet for that matter, but I do believe that moderation is the key to health and happiness. If I’m feeling really weighed down, I’ll try and switch up my diet. Giving up animal products (yes, that includes dairy) for 1 week can totally flip my mood around… before I start craving baked salmon and roast chicken again. If you don’t think you can change up your diet for just 1 week, try out these vegan recipes, and your mind will surely change.

3. Change Your Scenery

Stagnant scenery is guaranteed to make you feel stagnant. That being said, there are a couple ways you can change it up. Option 1: Get out of town for the weekend. Drive a few hours away and mellow out in a new area with your loved ones, or even solo. You don’t have to travel across the world to take a vacation (but if you can, why not?!). Option 2: Redecorate your home. I don’t mean that you should go out and spend thousands of dollars on new stuff; there are so many wallet-friendly ways you can do it on your own. You can try re-wallpapering a room (great tutorial here) or jazzing up the look of your kitchen (6 easy ideas here). Get creative, but get out!

4. Stretch Your Body

It’s no secret that little-to-no physical exercise will leave you feeling like shit. Keeping your body strong and flexible helps you today, tomorrow and the years to come. If you aren’t big into physical activity, be sure to at least stretch out. There are so many at-home yoga videos that leave you with no excuse!

The first way tends to be quite relaxing and stress reliving and it’s often considered a hobby. Life lessons are a better but also a harsher teacher– most of the time they are a result of difficult times in life and are accompanied by stress. However, they often lead to ways to be happy and positive in the end.

This can be done through various meditation and trans practices or thought control exercises. Controlling your stream of thoughts is a key point for learning to love yourself and a creating positive mindset.

5.Decide what your true goals in life are.

This is crucial for your life’s meaning and development. Maybe living day for day isn’t such a great idea? Satisfying yourself with small goals won’t do the trick either. Deciding what’s your main goal in life is such a beautiful thing and it brings you freedom, too. You just have to set your priorities and remember that no one has the right to judge you: it’s your choice weather sitting behind a desk, wearing a suit is your thing, or you prefer an extreme, dynamic life with a skateboard under your feet. Or maybe both! It doesn’t matter, just decide what you want from life and go for it!

6.”The Burning Method”

It’s a pretty simple trick of dealing with small, annoying problems and fears: write down on a sheet of paper whatever bothers you. Then simply light it up and watch your worries turn into ashes.

7.”Sticks and stones may break my bones…..”

The most common expression of aggression tends to be verbal violence. Name calling doesn’t actually bother us, unless they call you something that it’s true. If someone calls you for example “an ass hat”, I doubt you’ll be upset, because you’re not actually an ass hat (wow). But you still are angry/annoyed– I connect that to the subconscious anger towards the intentions behind the words. In other words, the aggressor knows you’re not an ass hat but those words represent his intention to annoy you. You subconsciously know that and that’s why you’re really angry. Next time have that in mind, build up your response to verbal attacks. If someone ends up calling you stuff that are actually true, just swallow it up and thank them for pointing out your flaws. After that work hard on fixing them. Or don’t, it’s your choice.

8.Snap your negative thoughts away.

A good way to live a happy life by keeping positive thoughts is “The Rubber Band Method”. All you need is a rubber band, your hand and some pain tolerance. Place the band around your hand and every time a negative thought flies through your head, snap it against your skin. You’ll be able to control your thoughts easier because your brain will connect negative thoughts to physical pain.  Unless you’re a masochist, this method will guide you to more positive thoughts.

9.Travel

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” These wise words should make you think about spending some time travelling. It’s pretty romantic, exciting and relaxing to explore the beauty and uniqueness of different cultures and sights around the world. It helps you open your mind and think more globally, not to mention the knowledge our beautiful planet has to offer you!

10.Be kind to people

The simplicity in this tip is so beautiful! Swallow up your bad day and be kind to that waiter! Why ruin other people’s day with rudeness? Rudeness is the weak person’s imitation of strength.

11.Properly apply forgiveness.

Forgiveness is critically important for relationships between people and is an indicator for a strong character. Handling forgiveness properly is crucial to your own well-being. After all, everyone makes mistakes. But have this in mind: was it really a mistake? And does it keep happening after you have forgiven that person before? There are people who would love to exploit your willingness to forgive. Beware!

12.Sleep cycle

Find the best sleeping pattern that fits your lifestyle. Sleep is important but there are various ways and techniques that can fit any schedule. Remember: it will be hard in the beginning. After passing the barrier of around 21 days it won’t be a problem!

13.Let the sunshine in

Ignore the speculations about skin cancer and so on and soak in that vitamin D from the sun rays! Sit on a bench, play some music on and feel the sun touching your skin, feel your body relaxing and charging itself with positive energy!

14.Focus on what’s happening now!

Don’t waste time regretting the past or worrying about the future. The past is gone, you can only learn from it. The future depends on your actions in the present so take action NOW and always have in mind the lessons you have learned from your past.

15.Correct hydration

This can be achieved mainly by drinking the right amount of water at the right time. Don’t fool yourself that drinking different types of soda will give your body the hydration it needs. 60% of your body is water. There are various apps that can help you hydrate your body properly through the day.

16.Smile

When you’re happy, you can’t help it but smile. This goes the other way too– if you smile, your brain releases the hormone of happiness serotonin. It’s a natural way of actually making yourself happy.  You can try this anytime you want, even in the morning while laying in bed. That’s a sure way to start your day off right.

17.Remember people’s names

That’s a great chance to make an awesome first impression. The trick here is to remember it, which shouldn’t be too hard. In the worst cases a rhyme would do the job. The key moment is to actually listen because most of the time you are anxious when you meet new people. Call your new friend back by name as soon as you get the chance. You’ll remember it for sure and make a good impression. People subconsciously love calling them by name.

18.Lucid dreaming

Dreams are the second “reality” everyone is sure exists. It’s pretty strange when you think of  it: while dreaming, you remember little of your “waking life” (enough to recognize places, people…)– just like after you wake up and don’t remember much of your dream. Furthermore, you experience the same emotions and react pretty much the same way, as if you were experiencing that event in “real life”. It’s like a parallel life that begins as soon as you fall asleep. So why not take it to another level? The web is boiling with methods of learning lucid dreaming. That’s the technique of being aware that you’re in a dream and getting  a hold on the situation. It also makes the dream really vivid and easier to remember. Exploit both of your realities to the maximum!

19.Emotion control

Note the effect emotions have on your decisions and how tricky emotional manipulation can be. So, next time someone tries to influence your emotional state, think twice! You are the one who chooses whether to remain happy or burst in anger.

20.Learn something new every day.

This will train your memory and enrich your fact/knowledge arsenal. It’s also a good indicator that you are growing, that you are making progress in a way, no matter how small. Spiritual growth and mind perfection– two precious causes that are worth fighting for!

It’s the Little Things That Lead to Happiness | World of Psychology

By MICHAEL HEDRICK

What’s the best part of your day?

For me, it’s waking up early and having coffee on my porch as I watch the sun rise. There’s just something calming about this little morning ritual. I never miss it, it’s truly one of the highlights of my day.
Of course there are other things that can brighten your mood during the course of your day that you might not think so much about. These are things like a nice smile from someone on the street, a simple question from a caring stranger, a hot shower or a kind and caring attitude from one of the scores of different people you deal with during the day.
My point here, if you can’t already tell is that it’s little things, and little rituals like this that can have a positive effect on your attitude and lead to happiness.
Harvard professor Francesca Gino was quoted in Time Magazine this week saying “You can think about rituals that you yourself might engage in prior to consumption experiences. What they do, they make us a little bit more mindful about the consumption experience that we are about to have. Because of that, we end up savoring the food or whatever we are drinking more, we enjoy the experience more, and in fact, we’re also more willing to pay higher prices for whatever it is that we just consumed. Once again, rituals are beneficial in the sense that they create higher levels of enjoyment in the experience that we just had.
In essence, when you are fully conscious of the experience you’re taking part in, you recognize the little nuances, the flavors and the feelings you’re getting from it, and that leads to enjoyment.
We all have things we’d rather not do, work, chores, that kind of stuff, but when we take these little moments to ourselves it’s like a little vacation in the middle of the day. It can boost energy and give us a feeling of contentment that can carry over to other parts of our life.
These little moments of contentment are important for us to feel grounded and to be able to feel like we can take on the world.
Having lived with schizophrenia for years, this didn’t occur to me all at once. It came over a long period of time as I slowly found myself in more and more of a routine. Essentially I have the things that I do on a day-to-day basis that provide me with a level of contentment, and that’s important for anyone. Especially those who are having a hard time.
It’s not just rituals or happy circumstances either. The little things I’m talking about can extend to relationships as well. Having the support of your family, having friends you see on a regular basis, even deeper, the inside jokes and the experiences you’ve had together. These little things can provide a foundation for happiness and it’s important to be conscious of when these good things happen.
Say you’ve had a hard day at work, when you come home, the only thing you want to do is crash, as you walk in the door there’s a note from your partner, when you open it all it says is “Just wanted to say I love you.” That’s just one example of a little thing that can make all the difference.

All said, the little things matter. Even if they don’t seem like it at the time.

TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION - THE STORY OF WILLIAM WALDORF AND GEORGE C. BOLDT

WILLIAM WALDORF ASTOR AND NANCY ASTOR
GEORGE CHARLES BOLDT
(April 25, 1851 to December 5, 1916)
He was a Prussian-born American hotelier. A self-made
millionaire, he influenced the development of urban hotel
as a civic social centre and luxury destination.

It was a stormy night. an elderly couple looking for a room for a night, came to Belle Vue Hotel, Philadelphia. The young clerk at the desk informed the couple that all rooms of his hotel were booked and also that not a single hotel room was available that night in Philadelphia because of an international conference.

However, seeing their plight, he decided not to let them to go out in that bad weather. He, therefore, offered them his personal room. The couple were reluctant as that would cause great inconvenience to the young clerk. "Where are you going to sleep, young man, if you give your room to us?" asked the old man. "Oh, I am young and single. I can sleep at the reception area in the night. I insist that you accept my offer as I cannot let you go out in this storm. You may not even get a taxi in this kind of weather." Having been left with no choice, the elderly couple accepted the young man's offer and spent the night in his personal room.

Next morning, before leaving the hotel the old man after having expressed his gratitude offered a handsome reward to the young man. "Please don't embarrass me with offer of money for my room. I didn't give my room expecting any monetary compensation. I just wanted to be of some help to you." The old man was really touched by the young man's compassion as well as high sense of honesty. "You are really a good human being, my son! I thought God had stopped making people like you. What are you doing herein such a small hotel? A person like you should become the manager of the best hotel in the world."

"I am quite happy working here in this small hotel and moreover, I don't have skills to run anything bigger than this. However, thank you for your kind words and compliments." said the clerk.

"Tell me, if I built some day the best hotel in the world, would you come and join me?" asked the old man with a cunning smile. The young man thought this as some kind of jovial gesture of an old man at an emotional moment. "Yes, if you built one, I will definitely join", said the young man, wanting somehow to get rid of the old couple as he had to take up the pressing list of day's work lying on his desk. "Good bye", said the old man. "You would hear from me soon." "Good bye", replied the young clerk.

Three years passed, the young clerk was already promoted to become manager of the hotel. While going through his mail one day, he opened an envelope and found a return air ticket to New York, with an invitation letter to attend an inaugural function. However, not much details about why was he invited, were given.

The young man became curious and decided to go. Upon his arrival at New York, the young man was welcomed by his host who personally took him downtown. There, in front of him, lay the finest hotel he had ever seen.

"That," said the gentleman, "is the hotel I built for you to manage." While standing on the street corner beside the soon-to-be world-renowned WALDORF-ASTORIA HOTEL, the young clerk, GEORGE C. BOLDT, was titled its first manager.

For the next twenty three years, until his death in 1916, Boldt remained faithful to the hotel and to the confidence WILLIAM WALDORF ASTOR had placed in him.

Leadership lessons from Sir Alex Ferguson | Blog | London Business School BSR

What are the lessons of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 27-year tenure as manager of Manchester United?  Pundits and former players have been falling over each other to praise Ferguson’s successes and his ability to bring out the best in his players.  But I think there are some wider lessons for the business world that can be learnt from his lengthy reign, and from the way he has handled his departure.

1.  Generating a return on long-term thinking.
It took Ferguson seven years (1986-1993) before his team won the Premiership.  Can you imagine the manager of a top team today getting even half that amount of time to prove himself?  Or indeed can you imagine a corporate board giving their new CEO seven years to hit his targets? The credit here goes as much to the United board as to Ferguson, for having faith in him for such a long time.  But Ferguson himself was also a long-term thinker, investing in youth teams and proper scouting efforts, rather than just buying the star players of the day.

2. Capacity for renewal.
Many leaders are hostage to their previous successes – they stick with investments (e.g. their star players) and ways of working (e.g. team formations and strategies), and sooner or later they are eclipsed by competitors with newer and better ideas.  Ferguson was a master of self-renewal. He sold off famous players, often while still at their peak, and he experimented with younger, unproven players.

3. Leaving at the top.
Many leaders stay in post well after their best-before date. This creates anxiety and disillusionment in the ranks, and it often leads to stagnation and decay.  Ferguson smartly chose to leave before anyone was asking him to do so. It also looks as if he has left the organisation in good shape as well, with a good crop of younger players coming through.  Leaving at the top is smart – but it’s even smarter to do it in a way that sets up the next guy for success.

4. Succession planning.
Ferguson presumably played a big part in the choice of his successor, David Moyes.  Wisely, the United board have chosen to avoid the star manager – Jose Mourinho –who might think himself bigger than the club. Instead, by choosing Moyes, they have gone for someone cut from the same cloth as Ferguson, and someone young enough to potentially enjoy a 10-15 year tenure himself.   Similar in many ways to GE’s handover from Jack Welch to Jeff Immelt.

5. Tough but Fair.
Ferguson’s management style wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea – he was famous for bearing grudges (against the BBC, for example) and for employing the ‘hairdryer treatment’ on underperforming players.  But his tough-but-fair was highly effective and, importantly, his former players have (almost) all said they respected his approach.  The important lesson here is that when it comes to style, context matters– Ferguson was managing highly talented, overpaid, oversexed, and not very bright teenagers, and he developed a way of working that was part coach, part boss, part father figure. If you are managing a group of PhD scientists or software engineers, you need to find a different way to motivate them.
What about mistakes? Well, anyone who has been around as long as Ferguson has made his share of bad decisions, and football fans around the world all have views on bad signings and star players he fell out with. But my biggest worry is that he seems to be sticking around on the United board. There is nothing that makes the new guy’s job hard than having the former boss lurking in the background, second-guessing your decisions. Jorma Olilla at Nokia and Stelios at Easyjet, for example, both made life difficult for their successors.  I think Sir Alex should make a clean break, and give David Moyes a free hand to chart a new direction for Manchester United.
